New Japan held two New Beginning shows on 2-9 and 2-11. The 2-11 show in Osaka was the overall better show. Tomohiro Ishii, the eternal underdog finally got the big win in his match against Tetsuya Naito. And the crowd went crazy for it. It was definitely the highlight of the show.
The main event between Hirooki Goto and Kazuchika Okada was also fantastic. Goto in his 7th (?) title challenge, once again came up short against Okada. But he gave it his all and had a spectacular match. Okada and Goto’s timing is incredible. Especially exciting was the post match standoff between Okada and Katsuyori Shibata. Hopefully this means Shibata will challenge next for Okada’s title. That’ll be something!
The 2-9 show in Hiroshima, while overall the weaker of the two shows, did have a match of the year candidate between Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi. Definitely a must see match. Though you can skip the post match air guitar.
Well that’s enough from me, let’s get to those GIFS.
New Beginning, Osaka
The Young Bucks and the Time Splitters had a really fun opening match for the Jr. tag titles. Young Bucks retained with More Bang For Your Buck.
Another good tag match on the show, this time a 6-man tag. The KES with Minoru Suzuki got a little bit of retribution for their loss against Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows from the earlier New Beginning show in Hiroshima. KES got the win with their double team powerbomb on Tama Tonga.
Tonga was on the receiving end of quite a lot of punishment in this match.
But he didn’t steal the show. Not this night.
Really good match between these two for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Ibushi retained with a picture perfect Phoenix Splash.
Tarver and Big Daddy YumYum lost their match against Tenzan and Kojima in what was one of the not so great matches of the night.
Tarver tried channeling Roman Reigns with that punch. I think you got the wrong channel, Tarver.
Ugh. Pretty brutal. I doubt we’ll be seeing Big Daddy back in New Japan for a while. He’s got potential , but he’s also got some work to do.
That entrance! Okada is now the new Ring Entrance Champion of the World, dethroning Nakamura’s Michael Jackson pole dancer entrance from Wrestle Kingdom. Oh, his match with Goto was good too. Great in fact. But that entrance though!
What a match. Naito and Ishii stole the show! Fantastic stuff. Great near falls, brutal action and Ishii finally getting himself a championship in New Japan. The crowd was 100% behind Ishii in this match.
New Beginning, Hiroshima
It’s become cliche now, but I don’t care, I still love that entrance.
That was Yujiro Takahashi’s main contribution to his match.
Shibata and Goto make for one fantastic tag team. Their match against Okada and YOSHI-HASHI was very good.
Did I mention Shibata and Goto make a fantastic tag team. That save by Shibata when Okada went for the Rainmaker on Goto was awesome. That’s the action of a true friend.
Yoshi-Hashi got Free Kicked to death and took the loss on both New Beginning shows. His second loss at the Osaka against Shibata was a Dolph Ziggler level squashing.
Sadly I couldn’t find any GIFS from the incredible match between Nakamura and Tanahashi. So here are some GIFS of Nakamura getting splashed to death from their previous encounter at Wrestle Kingdom.
