Day 8 Results

1. Tomohiro Ishii vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr.
Davey Boy hit Ishii with every move he had, but Ishii wouldn’t quit. Ishii-canrana, lariat and brainbuster by Ishii to pick up the 2 points. Very good opener.

2. Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Toru Yano
Tenzan hit a low blow and then put on the Anaconda Vice for the win.

3. Yuji Nagata vs. Shelton Benjamin
Benjamin tapped out to a crossface from Nagata. Really good match.

4. Satoshi Kojima vs. Doc Gallows
Kojima with the Cozy Lariat for the win. Good match. Kojima kicked out of a Gallows Pole earlier on.

5. Hirooki Goto vs. Tetsuya Naito Pretty awesome match. Naito looked to have it in the bag with the Stardust Press, but Goto rolled out of the way. After that, Goto hit a headbutt, then reverse Ushikoroshi for a nearfall. Then a Shouten Kai for the win.

6. A.J. Styles vs. Lance Archer
Styles got out of a chokeslam and beat Archer with the Calf Killer in what was probably Archer’s best match ever. Styles worked the leg during the match, leading up to the Calf Killer. Archer got some really good offense in.

7. Togi Makabe vs. Minoru Suzuki
Suzuki beat Makabe with Saka Otoshi. Makabe wouldn’t tap so the ref stopped it.

8. Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tomoaki Honma Amazing match. Honma once again gets so close to a big win, but in the end, Shibata hit the Go2Sleep and Penalty Kick for the hard earned victory. Despite having lost again, Honma is more over than ever. He’s in the running for this year’s G1 MVP. 9. Kazuchika Okada vs. Yujiro Takahashi And yet another great match. Okada beat Takahashi after a Tombstone piledriver and Rainmaker. Earlier in the match, Yujiro hit a low blow, Angle Slam and Miami Shine but couldn’t put Okada away.

10. Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
Simply incredible. Tanahashi beat Nakamura with a very nice roll up variation. Tanahashi kicked out of two Boma Ye. Nakamura constantly avoided the High Fly Flow by either rolling out of the way or getting his knees up. Nakamura escaped a Dragon Screw in a way only Nakamura could and hit a Boma Ye for a nearfall. Brilliant match from start to finish.

Final Thoughts

Just when you think it can’t get any better. The closer we get to the end of the tournament, the more amazing each show gets. It’s been a truly unbelievable tournament so far in terms of match quality. Tonight’s show easily had at least five 4+ star matches.
The main event between Nakamura and Tanahashi was exceptional. Very fast paced, very innovative. Amazing final few minutes.
Honma vs. Shibata was my favourite match of the night. Might heart sinks a little more every time Honma loses. And despite still being on zero points, Honma is tied for G1 MVP along with A.J. Styles in my books. With every loss, Honma’s hair gets a little thinner, and the crowd loves him a little more.
Speaking of Styles, he pulled out one of Archer’s best performances to date.
I’m running out of ways to put over this tournament. It’s truly been something special.
