2014 Tokyo Sports Awards

The Tokyo Sports Awards are a pretty big deal in Japan. Each year, the best of the best of Japanese professional wrestling are rewarded for their hard work. This year’s committee was made up of 21 individuals from all forms of Japanese media.

Most Valuable Player (Wrestler of the Year): Hiroshi Tanahashi (New Japan Pro Wrestling)
Tanahashi is a three-time winner of this award. He’s one of 5 poeple who have won the ward three times. I would have gone with Tomohiro Ishii, but this award is more based on who’s the champion.
Tanahashi got 18 out of 21 votes.

Match of the Year: Kazuchika Okada vs. Shinsuke Nakamura in the finals of the G1.
Awesome match. Tough job picking match of the year with so many outstanding matches this year.

Tag Team of the Year: Takashi Sugiura and Masato Tanaka (Dangan Yankees)
Eita and T-Hawk from Dragon Gate would have been my pick. Can’t complain about Dangan Yankees getting the prize though.

Distinguished Service Medal: Tomohiro Ishii
This award is basically the hardest worker award, and nobody works harder than Ishii. Wrestler of the Year in my opinion.

Rookie of the Year: Saki Akai
Saki Akai looks more like a model than a pro-wrestler, which makes sense because she is also a model. She is certainly easy on the eyes, and does a mean flying headscissors. You can find Saki Akai in DDT Pro, where guys are always trying to lick her leg. DDT. I don’t know.

Fighting Spirit Prize: Onita
This is award is like a career achievement award.

Best Technical Wrestler: B×B Hulk (Dragon Gate)
More like BxB Drunk.  Anyone?

Lifetime Achievement Award: Akira Taue (Former president of NOAH)

Lifetime Achievement Award: Kensuke Sasaki
