NJPW Road to Wrestle Kingdom, December 15th, Koga City Central Sports Park Gym: Results

And the road to Wrestle Kingdom begins! Well, in name anyway. It really began at the Power Struggle show, more or less.

This is New Japan’s first live show on NJPW World. I’m only  a few minutes in, but so far the stream is looking good. Unfortunately, Koga Gymnasium looks like my old high school’s gym before it was renovated. Suffice it to say, Road to Wrestle Kingdom does not have a “big show” feel about it. It is really just a house show after all. The card is mostly tag matches because we didn’t get enough of them in the World Tag League. Though it is understandable that the wrestlers want to save themselves for the big one on January 4th. Let’s just hope these “Road to” shows still get us hyped for the Tokyo Dome.

Card

  • Jushin Liger & Tiger Mask & Sho Tanaka vs. Taka Michinoku & Taichi & Desperado

Results

Jushin Liger & Tiger Mask & Sho Tanaka vs. Taka Michinoku & Taichi & Desperado

Looks like it’s going to be an all hard camera show. Also no commentary. That certainly takes away a little of the excitement.

Pretty straightforward stuff. Show Tanaka got hot tagged in to a pretty good reaction from the crowd. He did a nice spinbuster transition into a Boston Crab.
Taichi took his pants off.
Tanaka got put away (of course he did) with Guitarra De Angel (or Muerto. I forget) by Desperado.

Hiroyoshi Tenzan Satoshi Kojima vs. Manabu Nakanishi & Bushi
Kojima’s chops are the best. The camera pulled back when BUSHI hit a suicida. I guess we’ve got two camera angles tonight.
I looked away for two seconds and missed the finish. Kojima pinned BUSHI with something. Let;s say a lariat. Or maybe it was the TenKoji Cutter. It was a Kojima lariat (thanks @SenorLARIATO)

Toru Yano & Gedo vs. Minoru Suzuki & Takashi Iizuka
The match started and everyone disappeared. Literally!I ws staring at an empty rong for over a minute.
Later, Izzuka went to choke Yano from behind with the string/wire, but Yano turned around and scared Iizuka to death.
Gedo tapped to a Suzuki sleeper after some hard slaps.

Yuji Nagata & Tetsuya Naito & Kushida vs. Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata & Ryusuke Taguchi
Taguchi’s out. Now’s the real intermission. And that’s my dig at Taguchi for the night.
KUSHIDA worked Taguchi’s arm. He can be pretty vicious when he wants to.
Goto and Naito did some good stuff together. I don’t know if Naito is underrated, but I do think he’s under-appreciated. Shibata and Nagata had a nice sequence of throws.
The finish saw guys get taken out left right and centre. Shibata pinned KUSHIDA with the Go 2 Sleep.
Fun stuff.

Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma vs. Shinsuke Nakamura & Tomohiro Ishii
I know it’s a small gymnasium, but it sounded like about three people clapped along with Nakamura’s music. Honma copped a thrashing early on. He came back with a brilliant deadlift suplex on Ishii. Nakamura went for a Boma Ye on Honma but Makaba cut him off with a lariat. Honma went for a diving Kokeshi but missed. He did hit a running Kokeshi for two though. After a quick, and awesome Turmeric Clutch pin attempt by Honma, Nakamura got the win with a Boma Ye.
Good match.
Makabe and Ishii went at it after the match.

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Captain New Japan vs. Kazuchika Okada & Yoshi-Hashi
Captain New Japan is in the main event. Wonders never cease. Also, Tanahashi is doomed.
Fun match to finish off the show. Okada put away the Captain with the Rainmaker. Tanahashi and Okada had a great little opening sequence. YOSHI-HASHI saved Okada with a big lariat on Tanahashi late in the match, which set up the finish between Okada and the Captain.

As far as house shows go, this one was pretty straightforward. The post intermission matches were all good. Nothing spectacular, but the show breezed by and the stream was perfect.
