King Of Lingerie Style – NJPW Players Get Out Of The Ring And Onto The Runway

New Japan’s top players traded the squared circle for the rectangular catwalk when they surprised the lingerie world at Victoria’s Secret’s latest fashion show.Traditionally, Victoria’s Secret declines celebrity model requests, but Bushiroad – New Japan Pro Wrestling’s parent company – made an offer that the Secret of Victoria simply couldn’t refuse. The move is just one of the latest attempts by Bushiroad to increase its fanbase and appeal to the modern woman. The deal also gave Victoria’s Secret an opportunity to make up for past controversies. Some of you may remember the ill-advised Go East collection and the negative attention it brought Victoria’s Secret.

It wouldn’t be a fashion show without a little extra controversy. The word on the inside is that Bushiroad stole the idea of a Victoria’s Secret/NJPW cross promotion after viewing a leaked Super Sasadango Machine Powerpoint presentation on expanding the DDT Pro fanbase. Bushiroad refused to comment on the accusation.

Drama aside, the show was a huge success. Victoria’s Secret officials was reportedly very pleased with the style and grace of the New Japan players, and is rumoured to have signed at least two of them on as their latest Victoria’s Secret Angels.

Famed fashion photographer and world-renowned artist Tapla was the only member of the press invited to the show. Below are never before seen photos of the event.

First up! He’s more commonly known as  “The Wrestler”, but on this night, Katsuyori Shibata was “The Model”. Shibata really puts the Go 2 Sleep in sleepwear.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Not anymore! It won’t be long before one lucky lady/fella snaps up the IWGP IC Champ if he continues rocking the Final Fantasy inspired numbers like this.

Hiroshi Tanahashi literally High Fly Flew down the runway with his luscious angel’s wings.Victoria’s Secret noted that no angels were hurt in the making of the wings. One did die though, but it died painlessly. The screams were of delight.

Next down the runway was resident Sex Bomb-aye Shinsuke Nakamura in classic red and black colours, but this time replacing the leather with lace.

Finally, the highlight of the show, The Golden Angel Kazuchika Okada. The Rainmaker’s runway prowess put even the likes of Adriana Lima and Miranda Kerr to shame. Okada donned a, I don’t know, gold thing, complete with golden wings. Because angels! Just look at him work the audience. Not seen in the photo is Okada’s manager Gedo, who confused onlookers by constantly holding his hands up in the air and rubbing his fingers together.

While the show was a massive hit, not everything went exactly according to plan. Former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Manabu Nakanishi was supposed to join the other New Japan stars in their catwalk debut. Sources say that during rehearsal, Nakanishi, let’s say, couldn’t quite handle the pace of catwalk life. You know, he’s slow. Togi Makabe also pulled out at the last-minute stating he had come down with the flu. However, everyone knows the real reason. Ol’ Sweets Makabe suffered a severe tummy ache just moments before showtime from eating too many delicious pastries.

A replay of the show will be airing on NJPW World’s streaming service for a limited time only. Don’t miss it!

Big thanks to Tapla for her amazing photographs.

NJPW SHORTxSHORT #19: Girl Talk Part II: Girler Talk

Welcome, Puropals, to another NJPW World SHORT x SHORT recap. Regularly on NJPW World, a short video, usually one or two minutes, is released which shows us a glimpse of what New Japan’s stars (more recently Young Lions) are up to outside the ring. Episode #019 can be found here (NJPW World Subscribers Only).

On the last SHORTxSHORT, Young Lions Sho Tanaka and Yohei Komatsu sat down for some girl talk, as in they talked about girls. This week, the girl talk continues, and it gets even girler.

Screencap wise, this was not a very exciting video. For the entire time, Komatsu and Tanaka are just sitting in the dojo talking about girls and relationships, and at the end, Tanahashi makes his usual cameo.

However, the details of the conversation are a little more interesting. The conversation mostly focuses on Tanaka and his ideas about relationships, with Komatsu skillfully making things weird at the end. Like, Johnny Curtis weird.

First, Tanaka lists off a couple more characteristics he likes in a girl, which are common sense and beautiful writing. Geez, getting a bit specific there, Tanaka. And the beautiful writing, I assume he means handwriting, rules me right out.

Komatsu then asks Tanaka how long it’s been since he’s been in a relationship. Tanaka says he hasn’t had any girfriends since university. Tanaka is about 25 years old now, so I’d say it’s been a few years at least since he’s been in a relationship. Not sure if that’s sad or if I’m envious. Married life. Am I right, guys?

Now, I’m not sure if they mention this or if it’s my wife’s opinion, but she used the phrase “Herbivore Boy” regarding Sho Tanaka. Herbivore Men was a buzzword in Japan around 2008-2009. It’s used to describe a cultural phenomenon in Japan in which men are not interested in girlfriends or relationships. Tanaka seems to fall into that category. It’s apparently even been attributed to Japan’s declining birth rate. Interesting stuff.

Moving on, Tanaka then compares getting a girlfriend to a game. Specifically, it’s like the boss stage of a game. I guess the girlfriend is the boss character. That makes Tanaka the game’s main character. That means…ok I’m lost on this analogy. Any help?

Finally, in fantastic “let’s make things weird” fashion, Komatsu then says that he thinks Tanaka is “big.” Um, I’ll let you interpret that in whichever way you deem appropriate.

It’s his penis.

Oh yeah, then Tanahashi makes a cameo. It’s interesting how both guys stood up for Tanahashi when he entered the room. Some traditions are still going strong.

On that note, in lieu of interesting screencaps from this episode, here’s some more great artwork from the ever talented (and demanding) Tapla.

Sorry for any bad spelling this week. I posted this on my phone as I’m currently holidaying without my computer.

On the last episode, Sho Tanaka learned that Yohei Komatsu is a terrible interior decorator, and he had an adorable moment with a wooden tiger. On this episode, Yohei Komatsu gets a surprise while doing the laundry.

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 7.54.37 pm

As per the norm, this episode starts out with a Young Lion doing some kind of menial task. This time, it’s Yohei Komatsu doing the laundry. So, we see him literally just doing the laundry. He puts the clothes in the machine, he adds detergent, he waits while the wash cycle completes, then he takes out the clothes. GRIPPING!

But then, also as per the norm, things get good. They get real good. At the bottom of the washing machine, Komatsu finds a large chain.

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 7.54.44 pm

One very similar, or possibly the same as the one a certain Sweets Makabe wears. Doing what anyone would do in that situation, he calls the New Japan head office. He makes sure to mention that it’s Yohei Komatsu on the phone, not Tanaka – the ugly Young Lion. He then mentions he’s found Makabe’s chain in the machine, and wants to know if it can go in the dryer or not.

Screen Shot 2015-03-26 at 7.54.58 pm

TWIST! He didn’t really call the New Japan office. He was just talking to himself.

The SHORT Story

Yohei Komatsu is a pretty funny guy. BUT, Sho Tanaka isn’t an ugly Young Lion! YOU TAKE THAT BACK, KOMATSU!!!
